Top 10 Forts Of India: India is the land of culture and heritage. Before the colonial rule, it was known as the Golden Bird. Kings and rulers have made their kingdom and land more beautiful with their fort, they also use to mark their victory by acquiring the forts of other kingdoms.

Each fort has different history and architecture, basically they are special in their own terms. And now they have become a perfect tourist place to visit. Not only Indians but foreigners are also excited to visit these places while having a tour in India.

The construction of fort was started on 12 may, 1638, when Shah Jahan decided to shift its capital from Agra to Delhi. Its thick wall is made up of red sandstone and protected the Mughal dynasty for around 200 years. The architecture who made it so magical was Ustad Ahmad Lahori, who also designed Taj Mahal. Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur

Considered as one of the most formidable and magnificent forts of Rajasthan, Mehrangarh fort was built by Rao Jodha in the year 1459. This fort has a lot of historical storied buried in it. It is one of the biggest fort in India within 5Km. It has seven gates, made by different rulers to mark their victories. The imprints of the impact of cannonballs fired by attacking armies of Jaipur can still be seen on the second gate. Towards the left side of Loha Pol (Iron Gate), there are around 15 or so handprint murals of former Queens, who committed sati in the year 1843. The first thing came to our mind after listening agra is Taj Mahal. But the other beauty is seen in Agra Fort. It is just few kilometer away from Taj Mahal. So, you can catch two beautiful architectural marvels in a single day. It was the main residence of the emperors of the Mughal Dynasty until 1638. This is also known as red fort of Agra. This fort became the first monument of India which was designated as UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983.

Kangra Fort, Kangra

One of the most prominent attractions of Kangra district, Kangra Fort is located at the outskirts of Kangra town and around 20 km from Dharamshala. The thick and solid walls protected the dignity of the royal family fromKangra in 1615. It is built strategically at the “Sangam” confluence (places where two rivers meet) of Banganga and Majhi rivers. You can also enjoy the famous Jayanti Mata temple on a hilltop. Also stepwell called Kapoorsagar is a significant attraction of Kangra Fort. Kangra Fort is claimed to be the oldest fort in Himachal Pradesh. it was heavily damaged in an earthquake on the 4th of April, 1905.

Jhansi Fort, Jhansi

This fort belongs to the brave queen on india, Rani Laxmi Bai, wh fought for her mother land till her last breathe. The fort has ten gates. The Jhansi fort, a living testimony of ancient glamor and valour, also has a fine collection of sculptures which provide an excellent inside into the eventful history of Bundelkhand. The Jhansi fort is located in the middle of Jhansi city. It is 3  km from the Jhansi Railway station. The nearest airport is Gwalior, which is 103  km from Jhansi. Best time to visit the Jhansi Fort is January and February as a grand occasion is held known as Jhansi Mahotsav when many eminent personalities and artists perform their play.

Golconda Fort, Telangana

It was originally known as Mankal, and built on a hilltop in the year 1143. Golconda Fort is located around 11 kilometers away from the Hyderabad city. The Golconda Fort used to have a vault where the famous Koh-i-Noor and Hope diamonds were once stored along with other diamonds. Golconda Fort is listed as an archaeological treasure on the official “List of Monuments” prepared by the Archaeological Survey of India. You can also enjoy the famous monuments of Hyderabad (the Charminar, Hussain Sagar Lake and the Qutb Shahi Tombs). The main attraction of Golconda Fort is the light show which is conducted daily at different times. Visiting the fort during pleasant weather will be a great idea.

Junagarh is a beautiful example of the historical marvels built by the royals of Rajasthan. It was initially built by the famous Raja Rai Singh in 1594. Junagarh Fort is just around 5-6 hours ride away from the spectacular Thar Desert. These buildings depict a composite culture, manifest in the mix of architectural styles. The famed Junagarh Fort Museum is also a must-visit when visiting this place to get a glimpse at the history of the city. A temple of the royal family called “Ratan Behari temple” is also housed in Junagarh Fort. If you are planning to visit this giant fort, then the best time is October and February.

Jaigarh Fort, Jaipur

Jaigarh Fort is situated on the promontory called the Cheel ka Teela (Hill of Eagles) of the Aravalli range. The fort is also known as victory fort. The fort also boasts an assembly hall of warriors called Shubhat Niwas, a museum and an armoury. The fort was built by Jai Singh II in 1726 to protect the Amer Fort and its palace complex and was named after him. Don’t forget to visit Amer Fort whenever to plan a trip to Jaigarh Fort.
